If you’ve ever needed to tile a bathroom wall or any other surface of a room in your house, chances are that you’ve been acquainted with grout and the process of grouting. When tiles are set into place, there are noticeable cracks and crevices in the line where each tile meets. Grout is used as a filler for these cracks.

What is grout made of?
Grouts are a mixture of powdered concrete, lime, water, and colored pigment set out to cure. Sometimes it uses sand or gravel. Grout is mostly used when setting kitchen tiles or bathroom tiles. Think of grout filler as a sort of cement that hardens and plugs in gaps, fills in voids, provides support, or acts as a sealant.

However, there’s another type of grout with different materials: epoxy grout. Instead of using the typical cement mix. Traditional grouts have some downsides: they’re not waterproof, and due to this, it’s prone to stains. True to its name, epoxy grout uses epoxy resin with a filler powder to make it more waterproof, stain-resistant, and durable.

When to use which type of grout
You need to use different types of grout depending on the application. Let’s take a look:

  1. Unsanded grout. For tile gaps, or joints, that are around or less than an eighth of an inch thick, use unsanded grout.
  2. Sanded Grout. For larger gaps, use sanded grout. The sand mixed in will help hold the grout in place. Don’t use sanded grout on smaller gaps as this will result in too much sand and not enough grout.
  3. Epoxy grout. Great for surfaces where you expect waterproofing to be needed, like countertops or pool tiles. They don’t need to be sealed and are also germ resistant.
